50 Top Pizza 2020: I Masanielli – Francesco Martucci has been named Best Pizzeria in the World

The best Neapolitan pizza outside of Italy this year is in Oceania

An overthrow has occurred! I Masanielli – Francesco Martucci has been named the best pizzeria in Italy and in the world according to 50 Top Pizza 2020, the fourth edition of the celebrated online guide in this sector.  The establishment in Caserta stands alone on the highest step of the podium after the former tie in 2019 shared with Franco Pepe’s Pepe in Grani (Caiazzo, CE) who goes down to second position for the first time after holding the first place position for three consecutive years.  In third place stands Simone Padoan’s I Tigli (San Bonifacio, VR), which also received one of the special awards, pizza chef of the year.  At the bottom of the podium are 50 Kalò di Ciro Salvo Pizzeria and La Notizia 94, by Enzo Coccia, a pizza chef, both of which are located in Naples.

The prestigious international awards were also conferred for the top pizzerias in Japan, Canada, Asia and Oceania.  The respective results are as follows:  Pizzeria Braceria Cesari (Nagoya, Japan), Via Tevere Pizzeria Napoletana (Vancouver, Canada), CIAK – In The Kitchen (Hong Kong, China) and 400 Gradi (Brunswick, Australia).   This last Australian establishment was also recognized by the Best Neapolitan Pizza outside of Italy award.  Unfortunately, it was not possible to compile the rankings for the best pizzerias in the USA, South America and Africa because of the health emergency which impeded both the work of the pizza chefs and of our inspectors.

There is news this year also in the highly anticipated Italian Special Awards 2020.  Among these, the award for the young pizza chef of the year was given to Gennaro Police at the ‘O Scugnizzo in Arezzo, and the best new entry pizzeria 2020 was conferred on the Roman I Quintili by Marco Quintili.  The award for performance 2020 (or in other words the largest jump forward in the rankings- in this case from 106th place in 2019 to 29th place in 2020) instead belongs to Ristorante Pizzeria Ciarly in Naples.  Francesco Martucci’s incredible Futuro di Marinara is the classic masterpiece of a champion that has won this year’s award for pizza of the year. Meanwhile, the margherita of the year has been conferred on the master Enzo Coccia (La Notizia 94, Naples).  For the best fried food, you must go to Acireale (CT) at Frumento, and for the best fritattina di pasta to Carlo Sammarco Pizzeria 2.0, in Frattamaggiore (NA).  The award for best pastries in a pizzeria goes to Dry Milano, while the best dessert pizza is the Pizza Colada by Seu Pizza Illuminati (Rome).  The best dining area service is at Francesco&Salvatore Salvo (Naples).  The best wine lists, beer lists and oil lists are at 50 Kalò di Ciro Salvo Pizzeria (Naples), Apogeo (Pietrasanta, LU), and Giangi Pizza e Ricerca (Arielli, CH), respectively. Finally, the award for Best Format was conferred on Crosta (MI), and the important award for Innovation and Sustainibility was given to Le Grotticelle (Gaggiano, SA).

All announcements were made at the end of an exciting direct streaming broadcast, conducted by Federico Quaranta and followed by thousands of individuals on the various social media platforms and channels.  The now well-established countdown included all of the pizza chefs present in the rankings connected live online.  They were thus able to virtually accept the honors they received.  Among these was also Gabriele Bonci, with his Pizzarium, at first place among the 20 Best Travel Pizzas in Italy – by the slice and takeaway- 2020, and obviously Ciro Salvo, number one with his 50 Kalò London, in the 50 Top Europe 2020, the classification of the best pizzerias in Europe outside the Italian borders.  The European countdown received thousands of views during its presentation and was published in hundreds of articles all over Europe.
