The organizers have once again started their engines for 50TopPizza, a free online guidebook dedicated to the best pizzerias in Italy and around the world. It is the best-loved guide for enthusiasts and the most coveted by pizza chefs. And while the inspectors carry on tirelessly and in totaly anonimity with their visits to establishments over 5 continents, here are dates, the latest news, and the numbers for the 2019 edition.
On Thursday, May 23rd in Milan, at the l’Hub di Identità Golose – in Via Romagnosi n.3 – the curtain will go up on the initial Italian ranking of the 1,000 pizzerias present in the guide. The names of the 850 pizzerias will be announced, divided into two groups, 1 and 2 “ovens”, “not to be missed” and “excellent” respectively, which is now the traditional legend that accompanies the classification. Together with this announcement, there will be a preview of some of the 20 special awards of the year. Finally, the foriegn nominations will be revealed, that are from 5 to 10 for each category: Best Pizzeria in Oceania, in Asia, in South America, in Brazil, in Africa and in Japan. Meanwhile there will be 50 nominees for Best Neapolitan Pizza Outside of Italy.
On 27th May, instead, there will be the great online rush to discover the pizzerias who have made it to the tricolor national ranking from position 150 to 51, otherwise known as the “premiums”, and marked by the symbol of 3 ovens. At the same time, the participants who have been classified from the 100th to the forth position will be revealed for the Best Pizzerias in Europe and in North America rankings, new for 2019. The European panel of experts will be coordinated by the three curators of the 50TopPizza publishing project, Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro and Albert Sapere. Meanwhile, the North American panel will be coordinated by Mitchell Davis, executive vice president of the non-profit organization, the James Beard Foundation, with headquarters in New York. The James Beard Foundation’s mission is to celebrate, nurture, and honor chefs and other leaders making America’s food culture more delicious, diverse, and sustainable for everyone.
The Grand Finale will be held on July 23rd in the historic and breathtaking Teatro Mercadante in Naples. Here the top 50 pizzerias in Italy (indicated by 4 and 5 ovens) will be announced in an exciting countdown, as well as the top three in the North American and European rankings. Finally, all of the foriegn awards and the coveted special awards will be presented.
