Top World Artisan Pizza Chains 2021 – Latteria Sorrentina Award: Da Michele has been named the best artisan pizza chain in the world

Da Michele has been named the best artisan pizza chain in the world

Sorbillo and Big Mamma Group finish in second and third place.

There are 20 brands in the ranking from 5 continents.

7 are Italian chains in the ranking.

The recent phenomenon of artisan pizza chains is a novelty that has quickly taken off.  For this reason, 50 Top Pizza, the most important freely accessible online guide in the sector, has decided to confer an ad hoc award, the Top World Artisan Pizza Chains 2021 – Latteria Sorrentina Award.

There are 20 brands present in this first special edition.  In first place is the Da Michele brand, a historic Neapolitan establishment that now counts no less than 19 locations worldwide, with 8 in Italy and the rest spread throughout England, Spain, Germany, the USA, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Japan.  In second position is another name that hails from the Neapolitan school, that of Sorbillo, which includes diverse locations throughout the Italian peninsula, besides those in New York, Miami, and Tokyo.  Third place goes to the French Big Mamma Group, with numerous domestic locations and others in London and Madrid.

The pizzeria chains were assessed in at least five of their locations.  All of the inspectors in the 50 Top group participated, about one thousand experts throughout all of the continents.  They remained anonymous both for on-site inspections and for deliveries, as is the policy of the guide.  All styles of pizza proposed worldwide were taken into consideration, although at an artisan level, the classic Neapolitan style remains the predominant type, and is often synonymous with high quality.

“The artisan pizza chain- underscore Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro and Albert Sapere – is certainly a successful concept.  It has garnered simultaneous approval from both the general public and the critics.  Not long ago, when one spoke of chains, you were essentially referring to a few brands that did not have high quality as their primary objective.  They also did not respect the artisanship of the product.  Instead, today a variety of important names in the pizza universe, such as those present in this ranking, have decided to invest in this direction, beginning with the study of  the difficult concept of replicability.  The fact that this business concept has been multiplying year after year is certainly a significant sign that we cannot ignore.”

Dominating in the ranking styled by 50 Top are the establishments that originate from the Homeland of Pizza, or in other words, the Italian ones, a good 7 out of 20.  Other than the aforementioned Da Michele and Sorbillo, also Berberè, Da Zero, Saporè, Fra Diavolo and Rossopomodoro are present in the list. There are also 3 British brands, one French and one Spanish, bringing the total from the Old Continent to 13.  However, the fact that the phenomenon is of global import is testified by the presence of chains originating from other 4 continents:  4 from North America (among which is Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, in sixth place), one from Latin America (the Brazilian Bràz, in seventh place), one from Oceania (the Australian 400 Gradi, in eighth place) and one from Asia (Peppina from Thailand, in ninth place.)

“It should also be highlighted – conclude the curators – that there are 171 outlets of the 20 chains in our ranking located in Europe, the natural epicenter of the phenomenon.  However, what is interesting to notice is how this trend is taking off in other areas of the world such as North America which has 30, Asia with 22, South America with 10 and Oceania with 6.  And we are reasonably sure that the next edition will see a significant expansion in the numbers within the various continents. This is because there is a palpable sensation of a phenomenon poised for exponential growth with regards to the artisan chains.”
